A Morning in the Mist of Cibodas
At 06:30 a.m., the gates of Mount Gede Pangrango National Park opened before us. We warmed our hands around steaming cups of local coffee while watching the morning fog drift slowly across the trees. In the soft light, the forest felt alive — every rustle, chirp, and flutter hinted at the treasures hidden among the branches.
After a quick briefing, our journey began at the Cibodas Trail — a legendary route loved by hikers and birders alike. As the rainforest closed in around us, the rhythmic calls of Prinia familiaris (Javan prinia) and the sweet chatter of Zosterops palpebrosus (Oriental white-eye) filled the air. Above the canopy, sunlight filtered through mossy boughs, painting golden patches on the trail ahead.
Birds of the Rainforest Trail

Our first stop was Blue Lake (Telaga Biru) — a tranquil mirror of turquoise water surrounded by ferns and towering trees. Here, a flash of color darted through the mist: the Dicaeum sanguinolentum (Blood-breasted flowerpecker), one of Java’s most striking little jewels. Along the path, Lonchura punctulata (Scaly-breasted munia) gathered in playful groups, while the distant drumming of a woodpecker echoed through the forest.
Every few steps brought a new surprise. A Halcyon cyanoventris (Javan kingfisher) perched proudly on a mossy branch, its blue feathers glinting like wet sapphire. Higher up the ridge, the melodic call of Pycnonotus bimaculatus (Orange-spotted bulbul) floated through the trees — a true song of Java’s highland rainforest.

Cibeureum Waterfall and Hot Springs Encounter
By mid-morning, the sound of rushing water guided us to Cibeureum Waterfall. The air turned damp and cool, filled with misty spray and the scent of wild orchids. We lingered there, captivated by the view — a curtain of water tumbling from moss-covered cliffs into a pool where butterflies danced in the light.
Not far beyond, we continued toward the Natural Hot Springs, where steam rose between the rocks. The warmth felt heavenly after hours of hiking, a reminder of the volcanic life beneath this mountain. Here, while enjoying a packed lunch, we spotted the delicate Seicercus grammiceps (Grey-headed canary-flycatcher) fluttering among the branches.
By 5:00 p.m., as we descended back toward Cibodas, the forest quieted. The birds, now silhouettes against the fading light, returned to their nests. And so did we — our hearts full, our memories etched with wings and songs.
